Big Chippy Christmas Lights Switch-On – Thursday 27 November, 4 pm–8 pm

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Join us in the town centre on Thursday 27 November for our Big Chippy Christmas Lights Switch-On, when Chipping Norton comes alive with music, lights, and festive cheer. This year’s event will feature the Big Chippy Christmas Singalong, with performances from local singing groups and Chipping Norton Choral Society — so bring your best singing voice and join in!

You’ll also find plenty to enjoy in the build-up to the big moment, with entertainment from WRFM broadcasting live, festive refreshments, and a very special visit from Father Christmas before he begins his busiest season.

While we won’t be holding the usual Christmas Market this year due to increased costs linked to car-parking suspensions, the Co-op has generously applied for community funding to support this year’s Switch On event — helping us keep the spirit of Christmas shining bright in Chippy.

The lights will be switched on at 6 pm, so wrap up warm, grab a hot chocolate, and join us in celebrating the start of the festive season together.

Introduction from our New Town Councillor, Cllr Schor-Brener

“I am a dual French-Argentinian woman living in the UK since 2020 and in Chippy since 2022.

I am partly retired but since coming to Chippy I have been working as a carer for young people with learning difficulties. I work in two group-houses in Chippy. You can see us most days in town going about our lives. Though at times it is a challenging job it is nevertheless very rewarding to see how your support can enable somebody to live their best life.

I have enjoyed being part of the community into which I have moved. I find that people have welcomed me warmly and have given me the desire to invest more strongly into the Chippy community. It is a rare privilege nowadays to live in a street where you know your neighbours.

I believe Chippy is facing and will face ever stronger challenges to do with zoning and building in our area. How to find a balance between the need for housing, especially affordable, and the will to preserve the natural beauty around us. How to ensure that as Chippy grows, essential services such as schools, health centres etc. follow the population growth. Questions dealing with tourism and overnight stays as well as traffic and HGV’s seems to me to be the major issues.”

Remembrance Sunday – 9 NovemberWe will remember them.

This Sunday, 09 November 2025, Chipping Norton will come together to honour the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, past and present.

The parade will assemble in the Lower Market Place (outside Sainsbury’s) from 10:30 – 10:40am, before proceeding to St Mary’s Church for the Remembrance Service. Following the service, the parade — including representatives from the Royal British Legion, Scouts, Cadets, and local dignitaries — the High Street, returning to the Town Hall for closing speeches.

Everyone is warmly invited to the Town Hall afterwards for light refreshments, kindly provided by Penhurst Gardens Nursing Home.

A separate Act of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial on Armistice Day, Tuesday 11 November, with participants asked to gather from 10:40 am ahead of the two-minute silence at 11 o’clock.

The Town Council would like to thank the Royal British Legion, Penhurst Gardens Nursing Home, and all volunteers who make these important events possible.

Car Parking Charges and Community Events

In recent months, the Oxfordshire County Council charges for suspending car parking bays have increased significantly. This has had a direct impact on the cost of running community events in Chipping Norton, where temporary bay suspensions are often required for stallholders, staging, and safe pedestrian access.

For this year’s Christmas Lights Switch-On, the Co-op has kindly submitted a community funding application to help cover the parking suspension fees so that the main event can still go ahead as planned. However, due to the additional costs involved, the Christmas Market will not take place this year.

The Town Council will review how these charges affect future community events and explore ways to make them sustainable in the years ahead.
