Welcome to the May 2026 edition of the Town Council’s newsletter!
Flag-flying at the Millennium Garden
This month we flew the Earth Day and Ecology Flags on 22nd April. Earth Day is an annual event aiming to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held in 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org, including one billion people in more than 193 countries.
The Ecology symbol was created by taking the letters “e” and “o”, from the words “environment” and “organism”. The symbol was incorporated into a flag by the American magazine Look in April 1970. The flag was designed after the US flag with thirteen stripes alternating green and white, with the green standing for unspoiled land and the white for clean air.

Additionally, Town Mayor Cllr Sandra Coleman proudly raised the St George’s Cross on 23rd April to mark St George’s Day 2026, joined by members of the 6th Chippy Scouts and the Royal British Legion. It was a great moment of community spirit as we came together to honour England’s patron saint.
St George’s Day, celebrated every year on 23rd April, recognises St George, a symbol of courage and service whose red‑and‑white cross has represented England for centuries. He is best known through the legend of St George and the dragon, a story that has long stood for bravery and the triumph of good.

Charity Quiz Night
🎉In collaboration with the Chippy Larder, we hosted a Charity Quiz Night at the Town Hall on Friday 24th April.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to raise money for the Chippy Larder Book Project. We had a fantastic turnout, loads of laughs, great quiz rounds and some brilliant team spirit.
We are still adding up donations so keep an eye out on our socials for the final total!
